E-mentoring is a way to connect students with business and community members. Using e-mail and Internet discussions, students and teachers have access to subject-matter, experts and on-line resources that will support their learning.

E-mentoring:

  • Extends education beyond the classroom into the community
  • Connects learning to real-world situations
  • Increases sources of information and resources for students
  • Employs technology for research, collaboration, and communication
  • Creates awareness of the working world and career opportunities
  • Provides an efficient and effective way for business and community members to impact teaching and learning

Mentors are matched with students, working in their classroom on curriculum-based projects or research. The students and mentors communicate through e-mail and the Internet for a defined period of time. The mentors assist the students in finding information, conducting research, solving problems, and analyzing results. All communications are done under teacher supervision. Each mentoring relationship has its own unique goals, structure , and timelines depending on the needs of the students and e-mentors. Silicon Prairie will coordinate, match, and monitor these projects.
